Not June Cleaver - Essay Example This paper explores women experiences and their contributions in the post-war American society by reviewing I Wanted the Whole World to See written by Ruth Feldstein and The Sexualized Woman written by Donna Penn. I Wanted the Whole World to See Ruth Feldstein tells the story of a young teenager who came face to face with the seriousness of racial segregation in Mississippi, in August 1955. Emmett Till was a bright and bold 14-year-old boy who met his death for flirting with a white woman, Carolyn Bryant. Although the boy and his peers seemed to care about the likely repercussions of flirting with a white woman, they immediately forgot about it, at least before his assailants caught up with him. Roy Bryant and John William Milam approached the boy in the company of Mose Wright and drove off with him. Three days later, the badly disfigured body of Emmett Till was found dumped in the Tallahatchie River.1 At first, the community was united, despite racial differences in expressing shock and condemned the heinous murder of the young boy. Bryant and Milam were apprehended for kidnapping soon after they drove away with the boy. In the verdict, it was argued that identity of the corpse could not be identified. Bryant and Milam also claimed that they had let Emmet Till free and did not kill him. Feldstein through this essay shows the challenges that women faced, especially African Americans. Emmettââ¬â¢s mother, Mamie Bradley, sought to nationalize her grief and therefore generally the challenges facing the African American women in the country. She did this by first making Tillââ¬â¢s funeral service public. The service was conducted with an open casket shown. In this manner the world was able to see what had happened and equally significant the pain that African Americans experienced in Mississippi. The action of making the funeral service public and specifically the bold step of letting the casket remain open in the course of the funeral service had far reachin g effect ââ¬â it helped to tell the world, in the most powerful and persuasive way, the evils that were taking place in Mississippi against African Americans. Feldstein described the scenes of the savage repression of women, especially African American women, by the media. The story covered various scenes of pain and suffering that the boy and his mother went through as well as the shock and disbelief expressed by members of the society. Mourners from African descent saw the badly mutilated body of Emmett Till, and quickly recounted brutal repression which they had went through in the past.2 Additionally, it was evident from the story that many more African American women within the society had not yet come across such incidents or heard of them at all for that matter, because some of the regions in the United States like Chicago were more liberal compared to Mississippi.3 The discourse in the essay draw many similarities from June Cleaverââ¬â¢s scenario: for example, the suf fering of black females as was the case for Mamie Bradley points to the fact that many African American women suffered in silence. The publication of pictures depicting various scenes in the murder of Emmett Till and his funeral touched the hearts of almost all members. In its biology class, all students are provided with thin blue devices which resemble remote controls. These devices make it possible for the professor to track students' participation. As the teacher flashes a question and corresponding choices on the monitor, students use their devices for pointing their answers on the screen. Similar to "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" their responses are then tabulated to gauge their comprehension of the subject matter presented. Aside from the use of Microsoft Powerpoint, Macromedia and other computer programs for presentation, Hallett also mentions the use of gaming concept in teaching. As more and more students become obsessed with Xbox and Playstation, teachers attempt to use these technological tools to promote interactive learning. Games like "The Sims" and "Civilization" have become part of some teachers' lesson plan. These make lessons more fun and sustain students' attention span. In response, software companies have also released new games which are in line with a specific course.An example of this is "Making History" created by Muzzy Lane Software. Such measures should, at the least, include the following: reducing re-offence through education, training and employment; focused or individualized deterrence; addressing criminal gangs from the roots; Situational Crime Prevention (SCP), and; reducing drug use. Reducing re-offence through education, training and employment One way of reducing crime rates is to lower the ra te of recidivism or reoffending. A study of rearrest, reconviction, and reincarceration conducted by the Bureau of Jail Statistics (BJS) in the 1990s on inmates released in 1994 showed that within three years, more than 50% of them went back to prison within three years from release. Thus, 73.8% of property offenders released in 1994 were rearrested within 3 years and so did 61.7% of violent crime offenders, 66.7% of drug offenders and 62.2% rate of public order offenders (2002). In 2000, 42% of 459,000 US parolees reoffended within 18 months from release (Serin, 2005). A parallel study of reoffending in the UK published by the Audit Commission (1996) revealed that most repeat offenders come from disadvantaged groups, which could entail homelessness, unemployment, drug use, mental and alcohol problems. A majority of the offenders are unemployed at the time of arrest. The youth group has a high rate of recidivism, most of who are out of school. Generally, most prisoners lack necessar y skills for employment (Audit Commission, 1996) Intervention should be applied both in the prisons and in the community. According to Ofsted (2009), education, training and employment are the best ways of reducing re-offence. Joblessness triggers some people to engage in crimes and join gangs to get money. Education and training for prisoners will provide them with important knowledge and skills, which will work to their advantage once they are released from prisons. Employment will be relatively easier and ultimately, reintegration into society. Being armed with the necessary education and training also reduce feelings of inferiority upon return to their respective communities. Difficulties in re-integration can cause depression and frustration and compel newly released prisoners to resort to recidivism. For the youth, this encourages them to seek the company of persons similarly situated, such as joining criminal gangs. Education intervention offers a chance for ex-convicts for a better life rather than engage again in criminality. Technical training is best for most prisoners because it is less academically oriented, but adult and juvenile prisons should receive the same level of education as those in mainstream schools. We sent positive confirmations to Neutralizer, Mall-Wart, Run For Your Life Shoes, Paul Bunion Footwear, Sassy Shoes, and International Soccer Federation. We sent a negative confirmation to Tread. The ones that we sent a positive confirmation to, we were wondering about some discrepancies in the n umbers and needed confirmation that payments were being made. The negative confirmation was sent with confidence that there were no errors. Therefore, we did not need a response if nothing was found.We checked the numbers that we received from the confirmation and compared them to the aged trial balance for account receivable. The numbers matched up. Alternative Procedures Sometimes customers are not able to send a response. A reason for this could be that they are on a voucher system that lists payables by invoice instead of by vendor account. In a case like this, we have to perform alternative procedures. We could examine subsequent cash receipts. We could examine sales orders, invoices and shipping documents. We could also examine correspondence files for past due accounts.

Im going to focus on three main characters who are seeking revenge; Hamlet and Laertes. All wanting revenge for the death of their fathers. The main example of revenge starts off with Hamlet wanting to kill Claudius because Claudius killed Hamlets father. Hamlet finds out that Claudius killed his father from the ghost of his father, telling him how Claudius put the poison in his ear and the ghost wants him to get revenge on Claudius. Hamlet is ready to seek his revenge but he faces many obstacles. Hes stuck because he wants to get revenge for his father but he also knows whats right deep down. First he has to see if the ghost is telling the truth, so Hamlet is going to try and tests Claudius guilt, he tells Marcellus and Horatio hes going to act like hes insane to help him prove that Claudius is guilty. Laertes has secretly sailed back from France and he is terrified about the death of his father Polonius and sister Ophelia. And of course, he is now seeking revenge. Laertes is looking to get straight to the point unlike Hamlet. Laertes is happy to hear that Hamlet is coming back to Denmark, so his revenge doesnt have to be delayed. Claudius helps Laertes come up with a plan to kill him. He remembers how Hamlet has been jealous of how brave Laertes is with his sword. He made confession of you and gave you such a masterly report/Your sudden coming oer, to play with him. Now, out of thisâ⬠(4.7.110-119). They are going to try and convince Hamlet to battle with Laertes. The final plan is for Laertes to us a sharpened sword instead of a dull fencing sword. Laertes also plans to poison his sword, so that even if he just cuts him, he will be poisoned and killed. If the plan falls through, their back up plan is to offer Hamlet a poisoned cup of wine to celebrate. Now for the final scene of the play, one of the kings ask Hamlet if he is ready for the match. Hamlet agrees saying I am constant to my purpose. They follow the kings pleasure. If his fitness speaks, mine is ready, now or whensoever, provided I be so able as now. (5.2.201-203). Hamlet asks Laertes for forgiveness, (5.2.228-234) saying that it was just his madness not his will, that murdered Polonius. Laertes decides to forgive Hamlet for his offer of love. And decides not to accept his forgiveness until the fight has settled everything for him. Hamlet and Laertes pick their swords. Claudius says that if Hamlet gets the second or first hit he will drink the poison for doing good. The fight begins! Hamlet has the first hit on Laertes he refuses to drink. He hits him again; this time Gertrude rises and drinks from the cup. The king tells her not to drink it, but she does it anyway. The King says quietly It is the poisoned cup. It is too late. (5.2.310). Hamlet and Laertes continue, Laer tes finally gets a hit on Hamlet, making him bleed. Still fighting the somehow swap swords and Hamlet gets Laertes with his own blade. The queen has fallen, as well as Laertes. Laertes tells Hamlet that the King is responsible, he charges at him with his sword and forces him to drink the rest of the poisoned wine. Moment later Hamlet then dies. In conclusion, wanting revenge did nothing but make things worse for everyone causing many deaths. This shows that hatred can ruin you. It just seemed like all the characters made things worse for themselves out of hatred, madness, and poor judgement.
